In celebration of their much awaited album Humanz, we thought we’d give you a detailed look at the band we’ve come to love the Gorillaz.
Co-founders Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett met in 1990 and as it turns out they weren’t quite fond of each other. A stolen girlfriend tale and a few years later, the two were sharing a flat and after suffering through hours of MTV they came up with the idea for a “cartoon band”, which was aimed to be a comment on the poor television at the time seeing as Damon is the musician and Jamie the cartoonist.
Fast forward a couple more years and you have Phase 1: Celebrity Take Down (2000-03). Their first EP Tomorrow Comes Today was released in 2001. Featuring the single Clint Eastwood. That same year they released their first album Gorillaz and followed it up with the Phase 1: Celebrity Take down DVD. IN it amongst others were five Gorillaz Bites (comedy skits with the bands characters).
Que Phase 2: Slowboat to Hades (20004-07). Their album Demon Days released in 2005 debuting at No 1 in the UK charts. The album included singles Rock it, Dirty Harry and Feel Good Inc. Demon Days went five times platinum in the UK and sold over six million copies worldwide. Being the innovative creatives they are then went on tour using holograms of their characters to perform, even releasing three sets of vinyl figures the following year. After unleashing the Phase 2: Slowboat to Hades DVD their illustrated autobiography Rise of the Ogres was released. To top it off, the film Bananaz which documented the seven year journey was released online.
Phase 3: Escape to Plastic Beach (2008-13). Plastic Beach was their third album released in 2007, the album even featured the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. Featuring the single Stylo. After a release of Plastic Beach on their fan club website during their American tour the band then unearthed their new album The Fall during 2010. Gorillaz announced the release of their own version of the iPad app iElectribe, by Korg – which features loops and samples taken from The Fall as well as other samples.
Phase Four: We Are Still Humanz (2014–present). After murmurs of a new album in 2014 and recent media articles in late 2015. They both confirmed the hype and promised new upbeat and lively music. During September 2016, Gorillaz began an abridged retrospective timeline of the history of Gorillaz releases since 2000 and in March, Gorillaz announced the launch of their own festival, called ‘Demon Dayz Festival’, which begins on 10 June 2017 at Dreamland Margate in Margate, Kent, England. Which brings us all the way up to Humanz. Listen to it or watch as a movie. Whichever floats your boat.
